Guardian Program

We believe that every dog deserves to have a loving, forever home. All of our dogs are part of our family and live in our home- living life as our treasured family members rather than in outside kennels. Because of this, we offer a Guardian Home Program for some of our upcoming breeding prospects. Unfortunately, we feel we can only have a certain number of dogs living with us without sacrificing their quality of life and time which is the upmost importance to us! Because of this, we try and find homes for these puppies/dogs at a young age so that they can live their entire lives with their Guardian Home meanwhile still contributing to our program.

A Guardian Home is a permanent home for one of our breeding prospect males or females. Being a Guardian Home gives you the opportunity to have one of our highest quality puppies join your family without the initial expense of purchasing him or her. Once at an appropriate age, we will begin utilizing the dog in our breeding program periodically. At the end of the breeding commitment, he or she will be neutered/spayed at our expense and returned to you to live out the rest of his/her life. Guardian contracts with our males typically lasts until they reach 5 years of age and with females last until they have produced 3 or 4 litters. There are just a few requirements for a Guardian Home though as this is a huge responsibility!

Guardian Home FAQ

What are some of the upfront costs to becoming a Guardian?

Nothing! By partaking in being a Guardian Home, the biggest benefit is getting one of our highest quality puppies/dogs without the upfront costs! The hand off though is that this opportunity comes with large responsibilities- especially since we would be entrusting you with a puppy/dog which could be valued as high as $15,000.00. This means that anyone who is considered for partaking in this program needs to be sure that he or she can care for the dog appropriately!

What are the Requirements to be a Guardian Home?

  • Teach basic commands such as sit, stay, lay-down, “no”, quiet, and leave it as well as how to walk politely on a leash.

  • Potty train and crate train the dog by 9 months of age if they are not already.

  • Keep the dog as an indoor family pet and never allow them to live outside.

  • Keep the dog off of the ground where other dogs frequent (dog parks, pet stores, etc) and away from unknown dogs until the dog is fully vaccinated (around 16 weeks).

  • Keep the dog UTD on all vaccinations as required/requested by Breeder.

  • Be willing and able to socialize the dog with other dogs as well as people.

  • Be able to transport the dog to and from the breeder within a 3 day notice up to a maximum of 2 weeks prior to date.

  • Live within a 2-3 hour driving radius from Warrensburg, NY.

What expenses are Guardians Responsible for?

Guardians are responsible for a few expenses, but mainly the daily expenses that dog ownership entails! Guardians are responsible for providing food, treats, toys, etc. They are also responsible for normal vet care that is not breeding related. The dog must be kept UTD on all vaccinations including rabies, flea and tick meds, and heartworm meds at guardians expense. Any emergency vet care not related to breeding would be the responsibility of the Guardian aswell!

What expenses is the Breeder Responsible for?

  • Provide guardian family with a healthy dog at no cost.

  • Pay for all breeding related expenses (ie progesterone testing, semen collection, etc)

  • Pay for the spay/neuter upon retirement.

  • Pay a monetary sum per litter.

  • Provide lifetime support for the dog.

  • Always be willing to take the dog back if the guardian family can no longer care for them.

What are the requirements for being a Guardian Home to a Female Dog?

  • Female Guardian Dogs are Contracted for 5 years or up to 4 litters unless otherwise stated.

  • Females are not bred until they have reached 1 year AND have had their first heat cycles.

  • Guardian Homes are responsible for notifying Breeder immediately whenever female is in heat, no matter if she is being bred or not. This is for timing of cycles and ensuring a healthy female reproductive cycle.

  • Guardian Homes are responsible for NEVER allowing the female around unaltered male dogs, especially during her heat cycle.

  • Guardians would be responsible for transporting the Female to the Breeders residence for Breeding/Whelping.

  • Female will be required to stay a week - two weeks for breeding (depending on the levels of progesterone), as well as come back to the Breeder 1 week prior to whelp all the way till puppies are weaned at 8 weeks old. She would then be returned back to the Guardian Home.

What are the requirements for being a Guardian Home to a Male Dog?

  • Male Guardian Dogs are Contracted for 5 years unless otherwise stated.

  • Males are not bred until they have reached 9 months of age at minimum.

  • Guardians would be in charge of transporting the Male Guardian Dog to and from Breeder for Breeding activities. This has the potential to happen any number of times in a year. The Breeder would be giving a minimum of 3 day notice prior to needing the stud at our residence.

  • Guardians may also be responsible for transporting the Male Guardian dog to the repro vet for collection as we do participate in public studding of our males. This would also be a 3 day notice!

  • Guardians would be responsible for making sure that the male is not around any unaltered female dogs, ever.

  • Male could be required to stay as long as two weeks at the Breeders Residence for Breeding Purposes.

What if I decide that being a Guardian Home isn't right for me?

Becoming a guardian home is not for everyone! Please consider this commitment carefully. All our Guardian Dogs are expensive and huge assets to our program- and because of this we do not typically retire them early! If you feel like you cannot continue being a Guardian Home for whatever reason, you are contractually obligated to return the Guardian Dog back to us so that we may re-evaluate the dog in our programs. In small instances, we may choose to retire the dog early so that it can live out the rest of its life with its Guardians (provided they still want the dog). In this case, the Guardians would be financially responsible for the spay/neuter of the Dog.
